There are so many conversations taking place about sleep training, in person and online, but what exactly is sleep training?

Sleep training is a multi-step approach that helps a child learn how to sleep independently.  Sleep is a skill and like any other skill, it takes practice.

Prior to jumping into a method, parents need to set the stage for sleep. First ensure baby is old enough, 4 months of age.  The environment needs to be conducive to sleep.  Be sure to double check that the sleep area is safe.  Establish a daily routine. The routine should include set times for sleep. Routines and rituals are really important for children and sleep is no exception.

Once everything is set for sleep, parents may opt to implement a sleep method.  Sleep methods are a step by step guide that help parents teach their child to sleep well.  There is no set method that is universally appropriate for every family.  Families must decide what method works best for them.  The most important elements to any method are consistency and follow through. Any method will work if the plan is stuck to.

Sleep training is not only for infants. Although most commonly associated with babies, sleep training is an effective tool for any child that is not sleeping well.  Some parents of toddlers, preschoolers, and school aged children are unaware of the sleep help available to them.

Everyone has differing opinions on sleep training. Try and find resources that align with your families’ needs. Regardless of the way you want to get your child sleeping well, there is someone out there who can help. Please be sure to reach out for help, you will be glad you did😊.

Sleeping well is a gift for the whole family.
